Iris Collection

At Podere Cerbaia we have a collection of Giaggioli. The flower symbol of Firenze.

The iris, or ‘giaggiolo’ in Italian, is a truly beautiful flower. What’s the difference between giaggiolo and iris? The word ‘giaggiolo’ comes from the Latin word for sword, because the leaves look like swords. ‘Iris’ comes from the Greek word for rainbow, due to the many colors of its flowers. So, an iris and a giaggiolo are the same amazing flower!”

Every year we select a new color and plant the young plants in a corner of the garden. You may join us on the yearly expedition to the Iris garden, “Il Giardino dell’Iris“, and help select the ‘gaggiolo dell’anno’, maybe the same color that wins the contest in Firenze?
